Something Worth Watching

If you’ve ever watched a color-blind person witnessing color for the first time, you know their awe is contagious.

When they first put on the EnChroma glasses, their reaction is always disbelief. You get to see this every day? You've got to be kidding me!

And most of them cry because it's so overwhelming. They can't stop taking the glasses off because it's too much to absorb all at once.

The soul needs beauty. It hungers for it, and the world is filled with more beauty than we have the bandwidth to process. The challenge is slowing down enough to soak in the wonder before us.

I think we're most prone to let life pass us by when we don't slow down to revel in the marvels all around us. Seeking the next, we miss the now.

One night junior of high school, we were pulling into the parking lot after a tennis match when I spotted the boy I had a crush on at his car. My teammates noticed too, nudging me playfully, look who it is.

I shrugged them off, but while we unloaded the van and carried the empty water jugs inside, I stole glances.

He was leaning against his car staring at the sky. Not a care in the world.

"What are ya doing over there?" I called out.

"Enjoying the sunset," with a smile.

I never admired him more than in that moment because he was the kind of person so captivated by life that he'd stop to watch it shine.

Even and especially when life is busy, there's no time like the present to pause enjoy the sunset.
